ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The lecture is devoted to the oldest sources of knowledge about music. The programme of the classes includes an overview of selected issues relating to different cultural areas and different periods, as well as demonstrating the latest research methods.

The lecture is devoted to the oldest sources of knowledge about music. The programme of the classes includes an overview of selected issues relating to different cultural areas and different periods, as well as demonstrating the latest research methods. Planned lecture topics:

1. The Palaeolithic musician

2 Archaeological artefacts versus iconographic sources

3. Trumpets - examples of their use in various cultures of the world

4. Chordophones - their types and examples of use in various cultures of the world

5. Archaeological finds from the Polish territory

6 Archaeology of sound

7 Copies, reconstructions and re-constructions

Bibliography:

Specific literature will be provided at the beginning of the class.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course the student:

- has an in-depth and well-ordered knowledge of the most ancient history of music;

- understands the processes of development of ancient instruments in the Polish territory at the background of the European instrumentarium;

- is able to indicate the characteristics of selected types of archaeological instruments present in many ancient cultures;

- understands the specificity of sources useful in archaeomusicological research and is able to indicate the methods and techniques of research and the range of interpretative possibilities;

- understands the importance of musicological research for the development of knowledge of ancient cultures.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Written colloquium on lecture and readings.
