ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Short description:

Study of the musical instruments’ symbolism, their communicative and aesthetic / expressional functions and uses in the light of ancient literature, history of music and ethnomusicological research.

Full description:

The lecture is dedicated to interpretations of music instruments as a both self-sufficient and complementary world of music in organic union with vocal potential of human beings. This topic is discussed in relation to music history, anthropology of music and ethnomusicology. There will be presented as well as ancient texts on musical instruments as contemporary ethnotheories made out from field research. The lectures will focus on anthropomorphic aspects in the instruments’ construction, terminology and performance practice regarding also problems of musical aesthetics and specificity of folk and professional instrumentarium.

Bibliography:

A vast literature on musical instrumentology in different languages cited in the course of particular lectures.

Learning outcomes:

Holistic understanding of instrumental music in synergy with vocal tradition as interpreted in history of music and ethnomusicological reserach.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Evaluation based on attendance and texts written individually pertaining to contents of the lecture.
