The seminar focuses on problems of the cultural transfer in translation, examined on the example of selected language cultures.

The seminar focuses on the problems of the cultural transfer in translation, examined on the example of selected language cultures.

Reading texts on this subject aims not only at making participants familiar with a variety of culture-bound problems encountered by translators (especially of texts stemming from remote cultures – also in time), but also to show how the latter solve those problems, striving for the good of the participants of the communication through translation. The analysis of the texts should also lead the students to reflections on the pros and cons of single techniques as well as on the strategies adopted by the translators and the reasons of their decisions.

Moreover, the presentation of the translators’ ways of dealing with cultural foreignness/otherness aims to encourage those participants who work as translators (or plan to do so) to a reflexive use of the above-mentioned ways in their own professional activity.

In the area of skills, the student:

 has a deepened knowledge of linguistic aspects of public, intercultural and specialized communication. K_W02

 can use the achievements of modern linguistics, linguistic discourse analysis and social semiotics for the purpose of critical analysis and interpretation of cultural artifacts and intellectual and ideological currents. The student can identify the measures which build their meaning and social impact. K_U05

Moreover, in the area of skills, the student:

 is able to analyze a specialized text in the field of translation studies, and on the basis of that analysis s/he is capable of discerning its strong and weak points. S/he can formulate constructive criticism of the latter.

 has a sharpened look at the problems of cultural transfer in translation (mainly literary, but definitely not only)

 is able to appropriately analyze the causes and communicative and discursive processes; s/he can formulate his/her own opinions on them, and make and verify simple research hypotheses.

 can autonomously and critically upgrade his/her knowledge and skills, combining the sociological and linguistic perspectives.

Moreover, in the area of social skills, the student

 is ready to perform a work requiring (at least basic) knowledge of intercultural communication.
