Accessibility of Live Events

The aim of the course is to introduce students to basics of organization of live events involving i.a. people with disabilities.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about the specifics of providing events’ accessibility for different groups of recipients. They will learn i.a. about principles of providing accessibility of content (i.g. audio description, sign language, subtitles, audio subtitles),

material adaptation (e.g. Braille, easy-to-read text, high contrast), use of equipment (e.g. induction loop). As part of the classes, students learn about good practices used in Poland and around the world, monitor accessibility issues and solve practical tasks.

Issues discussed include:

- legal basis for events’ accessibility

- characteristics of various groups of events’ participants (i.a. people with disabilities such as physical, eyesight, hearing, intellectual, elderly, parents / carers) in terms of their diverse communication, digital, architectural and transport needs

- principles of providing accessibility of content (e.g. audio description, sign language, subtitles, audio subtitles, audio introduction), adaptation of materials (e.g. Braille, easy-to-read text, high contrast), use of equipment (e.g. induction loop)

- principles of space accessibility (architecture, transport)

- principles of digital accessibility (websites, mobile applications, digital documents)

- principles of event’s accessibility for people with visual disabilities and foreign participants

- principles of event’s accessibility for people with hearing disabilities

- event’s accessibility at every organizational stage

- tools supporting the organization of accessible events

Number of hours involved:

- 30 contact hours

- self-study: 30 hours

KNOWLEDGE:

Student

- discusses provisions of law and other regulations regarding accessibility,

- distinguishes and discusses participants' needs for accessibility standards,

- lists and characterizes various forms of content accessibility (e.g. audio description, sign language, subtitles, audio subtitles, audio introduction), adaptation of materials (e.g. Braille, easy-to-read-text, high contrast), equipment (e.g. induction loop),

- defines basic concepts of accessibility in architecture, transport, digitalization and communication,

SKILLS:

Student is able to properly select the service and prepare its specification to provide accessibility of events, taking into account applicable law and technical capabilities. The student is able to use the tools used to assess accessibility.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

Student knows the different target groups attending accessible events and understands their needs. Student is ready to critically analyze the needs and assess the received content and to comply with translators professional ethic principles.

60% - 67% 3

68% - 75% 3+

76% - 83% 4

84% - 90% 4+

91% - 97% 5

98-100% 5!

Two absences are allowed, including sick leave. Students with more than two absences are required to consult the tutor asking for make-up material. Missing more than 50% of the class may constitute the basis for failing the class in view of the Study Regulations.
