ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

Passed subject: Descriptive Grammar of the Russian Language. Morphology. Knowledge of the syntax of the Polish language and morphology of the Russian language.


Short description:

As part of the subject "Descriptive Grammar of the Russian Language: The Syntax" will be discussed: basic issues of the description of relationships of words, sentences, complex sentences, syntactic classifications of units and their relationships.

Full description of subjects.

1. Units of syntax. A word, a phrase, a sentence. Loose, connective and fixed phrases. Coordinating and subordinating connections between words. Types of word connections. Text segmentation of linguistic material.

2. Sentence. Definitions. Interpretations and characteristics of a sentence. Traditional and modern analysis.

3. Sentence clauses: main and subordinate. Separation of sentence clauses in linguistic material.

4. Simple sentence. Predication. Single-clause and double-clause sentences. Analysis of provided examples.

5. Types of single-clause sentences on the basis of analysis of provided examples. Complete and incomplete sentences. Interpretation problems.

6. Functional types of sentences. Analysis of material.

7. Formal structure of a simple sentence. Basic schemes. Structural analysis on selected examples.

8. Semantic structure of a simple sentence. Components of such structure.

Semantic analysis on selected examples.

9. Current segmentation of a sentence (theme-focus). Combination of all types of analysis in the form of multi-faceted description of a sentence.

10. Complex sentence. Subjects and predicates. Types of coordinated sentences. Analysis of linguistic materials.

11. Types of subordinate sentences. Logical and semantic and formal and grammatical classification.

12. Structural and semantic analysis of subordinate sentences. Combination of all types of classification. Analysis of materials.

13. Complex asyndetic sentences. Examples and analyses.

14. Compound-complex sentences. Supra-phrase structures. Materials from Russian press. Examples and analyses.

15. Review of material and practical skills. Analyses of syntactic structures of all types.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course "Descriptive Grammar of the Russian Language: Syntax" student:

Knowledge:

- has elementary knowledge of syntactic studies;

- has ordered knowledge of traditional and contemporary development directions of the Russian language syntax.

Skills:

- student has the ability to use the principles and methods of analysis in syntactic studies,

- the student knows how to use the basic terminology in the field of linguistics in the analysis of language (syntactic) phenomena.

Social competence:

- student is aware of the need for continuous education,

- the student is aware of the level of his knowledge and skills in the field of syntax and is able to supplement and improve it.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Written exam - a test consisting of three tasks

1. Analysis of a simple singular sentence

2. Analysis of a simple two-part sentence

3. Analysis of compound sentences

Answers rated on a max scale. 100 points

Question 1 - 30 points

Question 2 - 40 points

Question 3 - 30 points

Has 50 points

Test marks:

50 points - 3 sufficient

51 - 62 points 3+ sufficient plus

63 - 74 points 4 good

75 - 86 points 4+ a good plus

87 - 98 points 5 very good

99 - 100 points 5! excellent

Estimated total number of hours that the student must spend on achieving the learning outcomes defined for the subject:

Seminar - 30 hours (1 ECTS)

- independent preparation for each class (seminar) = approx. 30 hours (1 ECTS)

- preparation for the exam = approx. 30 hours (1 ECTS)

TOTAL about 90 hours

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
