Short description: |
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the most important issues in the field of literary studies, the conceptual apparatus and bilingual terminology (Polish and Russian), as well as basic research methods. The theoretical knowledge is then used for analyzing and interpreting literary works representing three general literary forms: lyric, epic and drama. |

The course is designed as an introduction to the issues of literary studies and will allow students to gain general orientation in topics related to literary theory and research of literary phenomena and processes, to learn about the most important regularities of the literature. Students learn the most important theoretical concepts as well as basic research skills and their application to the material of selected literary works. 1. What is literature? Literature determinants (the basics). 2. What is literature science? Theory of literature. History of literature. Literary criticism. 3. Poetics. Limits of poetics and competences of literary theory. 4. Literary work. Functions of literary work. Analysis, interpretation. 5. Historical-literary process (general model). 6. Theories of beauty in literary studies. Aesthetic categories. Values and valuation. 7. Sources of literature knowledge. 8. Artes poeticae. Aristotle (Poetics). F.K. Dmochowski (The Art of Rhyming). 9. Stylistics (classification). Metaphor theories. Style of literary work.10. Literary genetics. Lyrical poetry. Epic poetry. Drama. Genre. Sub-genre. 11. Metrics. Versification. Verse. Rhyme. syllabism. Syllabotonism. |

Learning outcomes: |
Knowledge Student: - has the basic knowledge of philological studies; - knows the specifics of the literary studies and its place in the general structure of the humanities; - knows the basic Polish and Russian literary terminology; - knows and understands basic categories and research methods used to analyze, interpret and evaluate a literary work. Skills Student: - is able to use basic literary terminology when talking about literary phenomena and processes; - is able to correctly select sources in the field of literary studies and make use of the information contained therein; - has basic research skills in analyzing and interpreting a literary work at the level of topics and problems, genre, composition and style; - can update his knowledge and improve his skills. Social competencies Student: - is aware of the diversity of scientific paradigms, respects and appreciates them. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
1 ECTS (30 godz.) - seminar 30 ECTS (30 + 30 h) - student's own work Written assignment with analysis of lyric literary work. Written test containing Questions: 8 Max points: 24 (8x3) Points and marks: 13-16 – 3,0 (dst) 16,5-18 – 3,5 (dst+) 18,5-20 – 4,0 (db) 20,5-22 – 4,5 (db+) 22,5-24 – 5,0 (bdb) 5! - Is able to faultlessy answer all questions (max points: 24), refers to knowledge not only from the teaching programme (points: 25). The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence. Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam. If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw. |
