  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Short description:

Students learn about social communication resources, learn about the market of printed and electronic mass media in Russia, analyze the language of contemporary Russian media.

Full description:

Students learn about social communication resources, learn about the market of printed and electronic mass media in Russia, analyze the language of contemporary Russian media. Different types of journalistic texts will be presented; the phrases characteristic for journalistic discourse will also be analyzed. Issues related to the use of such linguistic means in the mass media texts as synonyms, antonyms, metaphors, comparisons and others will be discussed. We will pay attention to the construction of sentences, and more specifically to the order of words in the sentence and the interpretation of non-standard (metaphorical) phrases in the journalist's text.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

– has knowledge of the market for printed and electronic media in Russia,

– has knowledge about the role of language in the self-presentation of the sender of a message;

– knows the language currently functions;

– knows the types of media texts;

– knows what is tabloidization media phenomenon,

– knows and describes mechanisms of persuasion and manipulation.

Skills:

– recognizes the different functions of language messages in the media,

– is able to indicate the characteristics of the language of the press, television, the Internet,

– describes the different varieties and styles of Russian language used in media,

– sees and describes the manifestations of aggression in language

– is able to distinguish basic linguistic manipulation mechanisms used in media communications,

– is able to parse the language layer selected press articles and television programmes.

Social competence:

– understands the need for lifelong learning; has increased awareness of the level of knowledge of the language of the media,

– is able to work in a group,

– is able to independently acquire knowledge and broaden research skills and take autonomous action to develop their abilities.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

1. Continuous assessment (current preparation for classes) – 50%;

2. Term paper, based on a linguistic analysis of the press text commentary – 50%;

Final grade 5! (very good+): current preparation for all classes and marks 5,0 of term paper.

Student workload:

seminar – 30 hours (1 ECTS)

independent preparation for each class: 15 x 2hours = 30 hours (1 ECTS)

Preparation of a term paper consisting of an independent selection of a press article and its lexical, syntactic and stylistic analysis – 30 h (1 ECTS)

TOTAL about 90 hours (3 ECTS)

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
