History of Belarussian literature - 20th century (1900-1920) 3221-S1-0HL22A

Students should be able to read fluently and speak in Belarusian. They should know the history of Belarusian literature to the 1930's - the most important characters, events, content know and understand the most important works and literary process in Belarus.

Blended learning

Subject matter includes the history of Belarusian literature in the interwar period and in the 1940's. There are discussed the works of such writers and poets as Kandrat Krapiva, Maxim Tank, Kuzma Chorny, Iwan Mieleż, Iwan Szamiakin, Janka Bryl, Wasil Bakau, Uładzimir Karatkiewicz and others. The importance of works is discussed in the political-historical (communism) context, and literary and cultural context (the first attempt to reform the literature, formal experiments, the struggle between generations, the relationship between tradition and novelty, et al.).

During the course literature processes that occured in Belarus in 1930-1960 are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the meaning of political changes for Belarusian literature development: the meaning and characteristic of belarutenization in 1920’s, representatives of both generations relationships to communism, socialist realism influence on literature process forming in Belarus. There are also discussed such problems as: individual life stories of particular writers in the context of social and political changes: authorities repressions in 1930’s and their consequences, an idea and meaning of fictional Liberation of Belarus Organisation. The work of particular novelists and poets is also considered for relations with social realism. In such a context chosen motives are analysed: national identity and its implications, folklore, fatherland, mother, countryside, social role and character of family in communistic reality, collectivisation and kulaks problem, lives of former decision makers, partisan war, collaboration, etc. In particular works there are also emphasised esthetical values that have an influence on Belarusian literature development: imaginism, expressionism, psychologism, behaviourism and other. There are discussed such Belarusian writers works as: Kuzma Chorny: novels „Lavon Bushmar”, „Luba Luk’ianskaya”, „Poshuki buduchyni”; Maxim Tank: poems; Kandrat Krapiva: dramas: „Hto smiayetsa aposhnim”, „Partysany”, chosen fables, "Chwiados -- czarwony nos"; Iwan Mieleż: "Paleskaja chronika", Iwan Szamiakin: "Snieżnyja zimy", "Handlarka i paet", Janka Bryl: "Ptuszki i hniozdy", Aleś Adamowicz: "Chatynskaja apowieść", Wasil Bykau: "żurauliny kryk", "Miortwym nie balić", "Kruhlanski most", Uładzimir Karatkiewicz: "Dzikaje palawannie karala Stacha", "Cyhanski karol", Laddzia rospaczy".

Exercises are designed to deepen the knowledge acquinted during the lecture, to develop skills helping in understanding a literary text.

The final grade will take into account the student's activeness in the classroom and oral answers given at the end of the semester, when responding to three questions drawn by the student, covering the entire range of material discussed during the classes. While assessing activeness, attention will be focused mainly on the insight contained in the analysis of selected work, while during the oral response it will focus on the students’ understanding of literature-forming processes and their knowledge of the discussed contexts of the literature.

Form of the exam: oral

During the exam questions are asked concerning issues covered during the lectures and classes.

Student: characterises an era, period or literary movement with the use of various determinants (philosophical, ideological, poetic, etc.), recalls the names of notable figures (including secondary), shows a detailed knowledge of the content of texts, performs a comprehensive analysis (referring to the genre, structure and content), lists various research positions, and places a writer's oeuvre and work in the historical-literary process. Their response is spontaneous, comprehensive, well-thought-out, and the student uses specialist terminology extensively.

Student: characterises an era, period or literary movement, shows knowledge of the content of texts, performs analysis (referring to the genre, structure and content), puts a writer's oeuvre and work in the context of the era. Their response is fluent, and the student uses specialist terminology.

Pts. 1

Student: to a limited extent, after additional questions are asked, characterises an era, period or literary movement, demonstrates basic knowledge of the content of texts, performs analysis at a basic level (referring only to content), lists only a few figures from the movement and their work, indicates only constitutive features of the era, period or literary movement. Their response is hesitant; consists of incohesive information, and the student requires guidance from the examiner.

Requirements for grade 5!

- 3 points for each question,

- meeting the requirements for 3 points and additionally: knowledge and skills from outside the curriculum, knowledge of reading beyond the reading list, references to world literature.
