Old Belarusian literature

general courses

Student should have basic knowledge about the history of literature of the periods of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and the Enlightenment, including the European tradition; indicated the necessary knowledge of Polish history and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Classroom

The course leads into the writing of the Great Lithuanian Duchy and the Republic. On the ground of history the problems of the role and position of Belarusian factor in the Great Lithuanian Duchy and European culture are discussed. The program of the course includes also literature of the period of Kievan Rus (on Belarusian territory).

Medieval in the Eastern and Western Europe. Medieval monuments of religious and secular literature of Kievan Rus with consideration to the Belarusian territories, such as homilies by Kiryl Turovski, The life of Eufrozyna Polotskaya, Apovesc of Merkuriush Smolenski, Slovo o vyprave Igorar, Primary Chronicle, Wedrovka Ihnacyya Smalanina do Constantinopola i Yerosolimy: the main literary motives, language and style, typical elements of poetics. Literature of the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Republic are discussed in relation to the development of historical events (the Battle of Grunwald, the Union of Lublin, Union of Brest). Renaissance, its aims and creators in GDL: their works, literary genres, trends. On the example of chosen texts there is discussed the genesis and development of old Belarusian language and literature, the evolution of chronicle genress (in the direction of local, diary records). Old Belarusian culture and literature is discussed in the context of European culture (such as philosophy of the Renaissance and activity of F. Skoryna, the Reformation and its significance for the development of culture and education in the territories of Belarus, the influence of Baroque culture in literature and art of Belarus). In addition, attention is drawn to political writing (Statute of the GDL, reports, polemics), development of new literary genres (poems, panegyrics, political satire, mystery plays, interludes, etc.). It is also noted for the prestigious position of Belarusian language in GDL and its position in the Commonwealth.

Knowledge: the student understands and has an advanced knowledge of

- the subject and methodological specifics of research in literary studies;

- the terminology of literary studies;

- literary processes and the impact of historical and cultural changes on their development.

Skills: the student can

- search for, analyse, evaluate, select and use information by consulting sources in various languages, including on-line sources;

- formulate and analyse research problems in the area of literary studies, choose relevant research methods and tools;

- use theories, research paradigms and concepts common to literary studies while communicating with the community and during debates and discussions;

- recognise various types of literary works and carry out a critical analysis and interpret them in a wider context;

- substantiate and draw conclusions by using ideas presented by other scholars in Polish and foreign languages;

- prepare presentation in Polish and in foreign languages concerning more detailed topics by using various theoretical approaches and sources;

- plan and organise individual work and work in a team (including interdisciplinary tasks);

- individually plan and pursue his or her own process of lifelong learning.

Social competencies: the student is ready to

- critically evaluate his or her knowledge and the content he or she receives;

- recognise the significance of knowledge in solving epistemic and practical problems as well as resort to expert opinion;

- correctly identify and solve professional dilemmas in accordance with tradition and professional ethics.

Assessment details:

control of the current preparation - 40%.

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence. Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
