Short description:

The aim of the seminar is to familiarize students with Belarusian literature present in Poland. The classes will discuss works by Belarusian writers translated into Polish, as well as writers of Belarusian nationality living in Poland.

Full description:

The seminar is to introduce students to the circle of Belarusian literature present in Poland. The course provides general information on the development of Belarusian literature throughout the 20th century. Selected works, both prose and poetry, translated into Polish by Belarusian writers will be discussed. The works will introduce the tendencies present in the Belarusian literature of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as introduce them to the socio-political context of Belarus. During the classes the works of W. Bykaw, A. Adamowicz, J. Hermanowicz, I. Szamiakin, I. Mieleż, I. Ptasznikow, A. Chadanowicz, A. Bacharewicz, S. Aleksijewicz will be discussed. U. Arłoua et al. Moreover, the profiles of writers associated in the Literary Association "Białowieża" will be presented along with the most important works.

The program of the seminar includes the reading of Belarusian literary works translated into Polish. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with a set of readings that shed light on the changes in Belarusian literature throughout the 20th century to the present day.

30 hours - 0,5 point ECTS preparation for classes

30 hours - 0,5 point ECTS preparation for passing

Learning outcomes:

The graduate knows and understands:

- the subject and methodological specifics of research in literary studies (K1_W02),

- the terminology of literary studies, including advanced and detailed contexts (K1_W04)

- rules of analysing works of culture common to various research schools (K1_W07)

- interlingual similarities and differences as well as adequate techniques of interlingual transfer (K1_W10)

The graduate can:

- communication technology, as well as prepare and present findings, also under unpredictable conditions (K1_U03)

- formulate and analyse research problems in the area of literary studies, choose innovative research methods and tools as well as prepare and present findings, also under unpredictable conditions (K1_U05)

- formulate and test hypotheses connected with simple research problems in the area of language studies (K1_U06)

- use theories, research paradigms and concepts common to language studies while communicating with various circles of recipients during debates and discussions (K1_U08)

- use theories, research paradigms and concepts common to literary studies while communicating with various circles of recipients during debates and discussions (K1_U09)

- recognise various types of literary works and carry out a critical analysis and interpret them in a wider context by using innovative methods (K1_U10)

The graduate is willing to:

- critically evaluate his or her knowledge and the content he or she receives (K1_K01)

- recognise the significance of knowledge in solving epistemic and practical problems as well as resort to expert opinion (K1_K02)

- establish priorities in order to achieve a goal set by him or her in the area of social obligations (K1_K03)

- correctly identify and solve professional dilemmas in accordance with tradition and professional ethics as well as develop professional competences (K1_K04)

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The final assessment will take into account the student's activity in the classroom, individual presentations, attendance and the test of the material discussed during classes.

Passing in written form

At the time of passing, questions are asked covering the issues presented during the seminar.

4.5-5 points - dst (3.0)

5.5-6 points - dst + (3.5)

Student: characterizes the epoch, period or literary direction with the use of various determinants (philosophical, worldview, poetics, etc.), evokes the names of representatives (also secondary) shows detailed knowledge of the content of the readings, conducts a comprehensive analysis (referring to the genre, structure and content), gives various research positions, places the writer's work and work in the historical and literary process. The statement is spontaneous, comprehensive, thoughtful, the student uses specialist terminology extensively.

Student: characterizes the epoch, period or literary direction, demonstrates the knowledge of the content of reading, carries out the analysis (referring to the genre, structure and content), places the writer's work and work in the context of the era. The statement is fluent, the student uses specialist terminology.

Pts. 1

Student: to a limited extent, after asking additional questions characterizes the epoch, period or literary direction, shows a basic knowledge of reading content, conducts analysis at the elementary level (referring only to the content), mentions only some representatives of the course and their work, only indicates the constitutive features epoch, period or literary direction. The statement is broken; consists of unrelated information, the student requires guidance by the examiner.

Requirements for the assessment of 5!

- 3 points for every question,

- meeting the requirements for 3 points and in addition: knowledge and skills from outside the curriculum, reading knowledge from outside the reading list, references to world literature
