ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Classes are designed to assist students in mastering the English Language to a degree that enables them to communicate in different situations of social life and to develop language skills (esp. communicative competence) on the advanced level (C1), with the overall aim being that the students reach the level of C1 plus. The aim is to extend the students' language competence in different specializations, which poses the groundwork for learning concrete specialist languages.

Practical workshops (15 weeks per semester, 2 hrs per week)

The content of the classes centres around congnitive and communicative needs to follow the demands of the market. The classes cover a series of language qualifications necessary in employment, both in the remit of grammar and in the remit of vocabulary. The aim is to develop the following language competences:

- effective listening to texts and expressing intentions,

- learning vocabulary linked with different speheres of activity,

- developing skills of forming monologues in English (compositions, descriptions of events, essays of different types,

- developing speaking skills, with the aim to communicate fluently, and spontaneously.

The exercises are aimed at developing the communicative competence. In classes the student has the opportunity to become familiar with the vocabulary and structures linked with the topic, so that they can take part in discussions.

The total no. of hours prescribed for meeting defined goals is:

* tutoring hrs - 15 weeks per semester, 2 hrs per week

* self-study - a minimum of 60 hrs per semester.

The grammar and vocabulary should be at the level of C1/C2.

If it is not possible to conduct classes on University premises, classes

shall be held with the aid of distance learning tools, most likely Google

Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Learning outcomes:

The student knows the English language at level C1 plus (K2_W09).

The student communicates in the English language at the level C1 plus (K2_U010).

The student is ready to critically evaluate their knowledge and contents communicated in the language of teaching (K2_K01).

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

- control tests and translation tests - 25%

- group and individual presentations - 25%

- final evaluation: 50%

The final evaluation consists of a written part:

Written test, where the evaluation criteria are presented in the form of percentage thresholds:

60% - 68% - 3 (sufficient grade)

69% - 77% - 3+ (sufficient plus)

78% - 86% - 4 (good grade)

87% - 95% - 4+ (good plus)

96% - 98% - 5 (very good grade)

99% -100% - 5 !(a very good mark with an exclamation mark)

A student is entitled to 3 unexcused absences, each subsequent absence requires an excuse. The lecturer decides about accepting the absence.

The form of crediting the classes in which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences in 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course.

If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, classes will be held using distance communication tools, most likely Zoom and Classroom and others recommended by UW.

Short description:

The aim of the course is to train the students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills at the C1 PLUS level of the CEF as well as to acquire and extend their linguistic competence in terms of perfect understanding of written and spoken texts, flawless delivery of content, expressing one's own opinion using the lexical resources and knowledge acquired, and communicating in diverse social situations.

The aim of the course is for students to master the English language to communicate in everyday life at the C1 PLUS level:

Students are able to understand extensive texts on a wide variety of topics. They will be able to understand not only the main message of a text, but also subtext, implicit meaning and the attitude of the author of the text.

Can express him/herself fluently, quickly and at ease, choosing appropriate phrases.

Can use language flexibly and effectively in social, educational and professional contexts.

Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed written compositions on a wide range of subjects, using grammatical rules and linguistic devices to organise oral and written communication in a way that shows a good/very good command of language.

The workload of students:

30 hrs.

Organized hours - 2 hours per week x 1 semester = 30 hours (1 ECTS credit)

The unassisted student work - 15 hours of preparation for the classes (0.5 ECTS), 15 hours of preparation for the final test (0.5 ECTS).
