Short description: |
Classes are aimed at assisting students in mastering English language skills at the level enabling them communication in many situations; developing their language skills, especially in the remit of communicative competences) at the level of C1, with the aim being the level C1 plus. Moreover, the overall aim is to acquire competences in specialised communication, a form of preparation for learning languages for specific purposes, and for translation of texts. During classes students hone their language skills at the level C1 plus (ESOKJ). The classes cover grammatical and vocabulary issues, which enables students to run discussions and to create texts, written and spoken. |

Classes in practical English (30 hours per semester) are designed to help students master writing, reading, listening and speaking skills in English at C1 / C2 level. The content of teaching is subordinated to the assumption of meetingthe students' cognitive and communicative needs and their intentions related to acquiring qualifications necessary for the future profession. The priority is to prepare future graduates for the needs of the labor market, motivated by linguistic competence. The aim of the course is to develop the following language competences: listening comprehension (a radio program about microfinance, three people talk about setting up on human colony on Mars, and a podcast about plastic) based on oral exercises (debates, simulations using specialized vocabulary introduced ); learning vocabulary related to the role of people in society, development of science and running a business; reading specialized texts (Stories from the pages, an article about life on Mars, a text about plastic); developing the ability to independently create complex statements in English by writing summaries of economic articles, essays (Fairtrade: for and against), writing official correspondence (a tactful business email); developing speaking skills, the aim of which is to communicate fluently; describing current events and own experiences, explaining plans, intentions, reasons, views; expressing opinions, active participation in discussions, presentation of topics from various areas of social life (talking about successful business, deciding and presenting the human colony on Mars); grammar (alternatives to if, phrasal verbs, cohesion and substitution, nominalisation), Student's workload: The numbers of hours that a student should devote to achieving the learning outcomes defined for the subject include: • organized hours - 30 hours in the classroomroom, 2 hours per week = 1 ECTS; • student's indiwidual work - 45 hours of preparation for classes and 15 hours of exam preparation = 2 ECTS Total 90 hours |

Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The final grade consists of: continuous assessment, shaping: - control and translation tests - 25% - group and individual presentations - 25% - final exam grade - 50% The final exam consists of the written part: the evaluation criteria are presented in the form of percentage thresholds: 60% - 68% - 3 (satisfactory) 69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus) 78% - 86% - 4 (good) 87% - 93% - 4+ (good plus) 94% - 98% - 5 (very good) 99% -100% - 5! (Very good rating with an exclamation mark) condition for being admitted to pass the course / to be allowed to pass the final exam: The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires a justification. The lecturer decides whether to acknowledge the absence. The form of crediting the classes in which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer. Exceeding justified and unjustified absences for 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course. If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely ZOOM, CLASSROOM and others recommended by the University of Warsaw. |
