Classroom

Short description:

During the classes the lexicology and vocabulary of the Ukrainian language is considered. This topic allows to present the lexicology and vocabulary as a plane of the language system. Other planes of language are phonetics, morphology and syntax, mastered by students in lectures of descriptive grammar. Classes in lexis and vocabulary are also associated with the subject "Contrasting Grammar".

Full description:

The Conversatory's task is for students to master the theory of lexis and vocabulary. The elements of lexis and vocabulary belong to the planes of the language system as an ordered system. Previously, during classes in descriptive grammar, students learned the theoretical principles of phonology, morphology and syntax, which are also planes of the linguistic system. In this way, the students' mastery of the theory of lexis and vocabulary complements their understanding of the relations that occur between the elements of the language system.

In turn, lexis not only includes a set of all the words of a language, but is also a system itself. During the lectures the elements of the lexical system of the Ukrainian language are considered. The topics of the lectures are the types of word meanings, polysemy and monosemy, lexical synonym, antonimia, paronymy. One of the lectures is devoted not only to lexical homonym, but also to inter-language Ukrainian-Polish homonym. Students learn about the resources of native and borrowed Ukrainian lexis, neologisms and archaisms, specialized lexis and jargon.

During the classes the most important notions of vocabulary are considered, including the vocabulary category, vocabulary nest. The notion of a word-generating type is related to the understanding of productivity of different types in the Ukrainian language. The student is supposed to know the notion of morph and morph, understand the types of morphs, morphic variants, morphic functions.

The linguistic material necessary for lexical-semantic and word-forming analysis broadens students' language skills, because lectures are conducted in Ukrainian.

If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, the classes will be held using remote communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the UW.
