Classroom

Classes are endeavoured at familiarizing students with Lithuanian culture history on the backdrop of political and social development from the Middle Ages to 1918.

Pełny opis: The class aims to familiarise students with the main problems of Lithuanian culture history in political and social affairs from the Middle Ages to 1918. Issues such as identity, cultural interactions, religious aspects, Changes in manhood and mentality, and reflection on the meaning of the people's history. The Student develops his research skills, learns to acquire knowledge independently, using the support of a scientific supervisor.

The following issues will be discussed:

1. Types of Balkan tribes and their interactions. Tribal culture and the religion of the Balkans.

2. First mentions in the sources of the tribes of the Żmudzins and Lithuanians.

3. The unification of the Lithuanian lands by Mendoga. The significance of the Mendoga character for the Lithuanian national heritage.

4. Giedyminowicz dynasty in the 14TH century: a multicultural aspect of the WKL.

5. Baptism of Lithuania and its significance for cultural transformations in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

6. The Idea of the Jagiellonian dynasty during the reign of Władysław and Kazimierz Jagiellończyk.

7. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16TH century: between Catholicism, Orthodox and Protestantism.

8. "For Lithuanians in Lithuania" – the significance of the Catechism of Martynas Mažvydas.

9. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17TH and 18TH centuries. Examples of the mutual influence of Polish and Lithuanian cultures.

10. From the Vilnius Academy to the Lithuanian Main school: prominent representatives of the university and their influence on the shaping of the Vilnius universe.

11. Lithuanian lands in the Russian Zaborze (from 1795 to 1861 years). Awareness of independence after the defeat of the Kościuszko Uprising after the period preceding the January insurrection (Philomaci, Philareci, great emigration).

12. The origins of Lithuanian national revival: Elections and disputes about identity.

13. The ideology of the Nationers as the third road to the Polish-Lithuanian dilemmas.

14. The Revolution of 1905 and the transformation of the national situation in the Lithuanian lands.

15. Lithuanian National Movement during World War I.

Knowledge: A graduate knows and understands:

[Knowledge:]

1) has a basic knowledge of the terminology of cultural studies, taking into account the research perspectives of Central-Eastern Europe (directions, texts, researchers in the field of cultural studies) and the specifics of the development of these studies in the countries of the region; has a basic knowledge of the terminology of related disciplines, which is indispensable in becoming acquainted with and understanding the cultural phenomena of these countries.

2) has a basic knowledge of the specifics of various cultural models in anthropological terms (traditional, nobility, bourgeoisie, the masses), the processes of their transformation and interconnections as well as their emanations in the symbolic and semiotic spheres, and thus in the arena of the culture, art, literature, and history of Central-Eastern Europe.

[Skills:]

3) is able to search, select, analyse, and make use of the information he or she needs from various sources.

4) is able to develop his or her research skills; acquire knowledge independently, making use of the support of an academic supervisor; skilfully formulate thoughts; and present the results of research in the form of oral or written statements (of various types).

[Social competences:]

5) is prepared to critically assess his or her knowledge, engage in continuous learning, and supplement acquired knowledge.

6) to set priorities for the implementation of tasks assigned to him or her and others in the area of social obligations.

Metody i kryteria oceniania: One condition for passing the subject is compulsory attendance at classes in accordance with the Details of principles of study at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics (resolution no. 114 of the LS Division Council of 19 December 2017).

Classes will be conducted in the form of exercises. Active participation in the exercises means substantive participation in at least 50% of the classes.

The final grade comprises:

Active and substantive participation in classes (10%)

Written work or presentation on the subject designated by the lecturer (30%).

Written work (60%)

Written work (3-6 pages) or a presentation on the material provided by the lecturer - this will include the matter discussed during the classes.

The final deadline for submitting a paper is the date set by the teacher during the first or second class. Students absent from these classes are required to obtain information from the teacher conducting the class.

Oral (40%): full answer = 40%, partial = 20%.

0‒49%: 2

50‒60%: 3

61‒70%: 3+

71‒80%: 4

81‒90%: 4+

91‒100%: 5
