The series of seminars concerns the history of the Orthodox Church in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in the XX-XXI century.

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the history of the Orthodox Church in the region in the XX-XXI century. The influence of Eastern Christianity on the culture of the nations of Central and Eastern Europe will be shown. We will also follow the influence of Orthodoxy on the process of shaping the national consciousness of its followers. The relations between the state and the Church on particular stages of development of the region's states will be analyzed. The situation of the Orthodox Church in the conditions of two totalitarian regimes will be presented.

The following issues are discussed as part of the course:

1. The history of the division of the Eastern and Western Church. Political, cultural and dogmatic conditions

2. Outline of the history of the Orthodox Church in the lands of Poland and Lithuania:

a) from the Baptism of Rus against the invasion of the Mongols

b) from the invasion of the Mongols to the Union of Lublin

c) from the Union of Lublin to the partitions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth

d) from the partitions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth

3. Outline of the history of the Orthodox Church in Russia:

a) the period of existence of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the Russian Empire

b) from deleting to reactivation of the Patriarch's office

4. Russian Orthodox Church during the civil war in Russia and the first decades of Bolshevik rule

a) the Council of Moscow 1917-1918

b) Bolshevik repression

5. Location of the Orthodox Church in Poland in the interwar period

a) legal and organizational location

b) establishing autocephaly

c) the policy of the authorities of the Second Polish Republic towards the Orthodox Church

Student after completing the course:

1) knows and understands in an advanced degree the history of the Orthodox Church in Central and Eastern Europe in the XX-XXI century (S1_W01);

2) searches, analyzes, evaluates, selects and uses information on the history of Eastern Orthodoxy in the region in the XX-XXI century (S1_U01);

3) referring to the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge, can use it in typical professional statements regarding the history of the Eastern Church in Central and Eastern Europe in the XX-XXI centuries (S1_U02);

4) develops their research skills, acquire knowledge independently, using the support of a scientific supervisor; presents the results of research in the form of an oral statement or paper (S1_U03);

5) can prepare a written and oral statement on selected topics in the history of the Orthodox Church in the region and present the results of his work on the group forum (S1_U06);

6) is ready for continuous education and supplementing the acquired knowledge (S1_K04)

The condition for admission to pass the grade is compulsory attendance (maximum number of unjustified absences is allowed).

There is a written work (4-6 pages).

The pass will be oral. It will include knowledge of the material discussed during the classes during the semester and one book selected by the student from the presented list of literature. Completion will include two questions - one randomly selected from the material discussed in class, one of the selected reading.

The final grade consists of: written work (20%) and oral exam (80%). Oral assessment consisting of three questions - 80% (comprehensive answer - 40%, partial - 20%).

0-49% - 2

50-60% - 3

61-70% - 3+

71-80% - 4

81-90% - 4+

91-100% - 5
