Prerequisites (description):

The course develops key language competencies in French at the B2+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The aim of the course is to introduce French as a language spoken in multicultural, often bilingual communities in Canada, the Caribbean and Europe, as well as to improve competence in understanding different varieties of French and actively using the language at the B2+ level and its use in social debate.

The course develops key language competencies in French at the B2+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The aim of the course is to introduce French as a language spoken in multicultural, often bilingual communities in Canada, the Caribbean and Europe, as well as to improve competence in understanding different varieties of French and actively using the language at the B2+ level and its use in social debate.

Full description:

The course presents French as it functions in ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse, often bilingual communities in Canada, the Caribbean and Europe. The course will present selected varieties of French. Analysis of texts and audiovisual materials from various francophone countries will also be a component of the class.

The class will include exercises in writing, vocabulary and conversation on topics relevant to cross-cultural communication and public debate in various francophone countries, particularly Canada :

Interculturalism in Canada and Francophone countries

- Different francophone accents

- Bilingualism and multilingualism

- Inclusive language

- Interculturalism and "vivre ensemble"

- Intercultural and interpersonal (dis)understandings

Colonization and migration

- Colonial testimonies

- Large migrant communities in Canada and French-speaking Europe

- Human rights

The course provides an extended knowledge of some Francophone social issues and of their specific vocabulary. The course also improves the ability to analyze, discuss and use scientific and academic materials (in particular of Canadian authors) in order to apply them in a practical way for personal researches.

The materials discussed in the course are a combination of linguistic and academic textbooks, popular science videos, and exercises prepared by the lecturer.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, the student:

- knows and understands various Francophone accents and their specific features (K_W08)

- has a broad knowledge of Francophone culture and its vocabulary

- has a specialized vocabulary of socio-cultural issues, in particular multiculturalism, and migration

- understands professional articles on multiculturalism, and migration

Students are able to:

- analyze scientific and literary texts, especially by authors from various Canadian studies, and use them in complex oral and/or written statements (K_U05) (K_U06)

- create complex, lengthy statements using other points of view and various sources (podcasts, videos, articles, journals, interviews, literary quotations, diagrams, charts...) (K_U08) (K_U13)

- speak French at the C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages on social issues of the Francophone world. (K_U14)

The student is ready to:

- engage in dialogue, debate and cooperate in a group to find a solution to a problem (K_K10)

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The basis for credit is:

- 1 mini-test on specific vocabulary,

- preparation of a short speech on an established topic and initiation of discussion;

- independent work in preparation for class (reading texts and listening to recordings);

- active participation in class.
