Short description:

The goal of the course is to familiarize students with principles underlying communication and argumentation, with special focus on pragmatic factors. This in turn will help students improve their communicative skills and argumentative techniques.

We will draw on such notions as logos, pathos and ethos, known in rhetoric since antiquity, and also on topic recently explored by linguists, such as explicit and implicit communication, or linguistic politeness. Additionally, we will touch upon the use of figures of speech and humor as persuasive devices. The theoretical notions will be explained and amply illustrated with examples drawn from the media discourse and film discourse. The classes will also provide an opportunity for students to practice speaking in English in a friendly environment.
