The second semester of the course aiming at offering a comprehensive coverage of basic areas of English grammar. The second semester introduces concentrates on the Verb Phrase and discusses such issues as types of verbs, tense and aspect, the ways of expressing futurity, modality and passivization. |

The second semester of the course aiming at offering a comprehensive coverage of basic areas of English grammar. The second semester introduces concentrates on the Verb Phrase and discusses such issues as types of verbs, tense and aspect, the ways of expressing futurity, modality and passivization. THE VERB PHRASE • The structure of the verb phrase (operators) • Types of verbs • Tense, aspect, mood • Tense and aspect (the present and the progressive, the perfective and the past. • Narrative tenses • Ways of expressing futurity • The Passive Voice (basic patterns in present and past) • Modality (epistemic/ deontic modality) the homework. |

Learning outcomes: |
The student knows the basis structure of the verb phrase and can identify operators. The student knows the types and the basis features of English verbs. The student understands the basic features of the English tense and aspect system. The student can use the knowledge in written exercises. The student can use the knowledge to correct errors in sentences. The student knows and uses various forms of expressing the future. The student knows and uses various forms of passivization with various verb categories. The student knows restrictions on the formation of passive sentences. The student understands the notion of modality and its types. The student can use modal verbs and different alternative types of expressing modality.
