Full description:	The popularity of disaster movies and ecological thrillers in the 20th and 21st centuries makes us reflect on the phenomenon of voyeurism in the global society and the lack of commitment to environmental protection. According to Axel Goodbody, in medieval texts the Apocalypse means the end of the world, but the Bible holds out the hope of living forever: a new order will arise in place of the old. As the researcher states, the literature on the ecological catastrophe presents the inevitable end of civilization and there is no chance of saving the human species. Solvejg Nitzke calls environmental degradation an Apocalypse "from within" because it is caused by inappropriate human actions. The aim of the course is to improve student’s knowledge about the development of catastrophism in the 20th and 21st centuries, to familiarize them with dystopian images of the future of our planet in contemporary literature, film and art and with selected theoretical works (mainly in German-speaking countries). During our classes we are going to discuss the following topics: - key concepts (disaster, ecocriticism, dystopia, intermediality, etc.); - the most important theoretical works in the field of ecocriticism and catastrophic discourses; - dystopian images of the future of our planet in contemporary literature -examples; - disaster movies – examples; - disaster in contemporary art - examples.

Learning outcomes:	- Students are able to analyze and to compare literary texts, films and works of art. - They know examples of texts, films and works of art which represent the trend of catastrophism and/or ecocriticism. - They are able to use the methods of comparative studies. - They know the main theoretical works in such fields as aesthetics, the history of literature and the history of art. - They are able to present their point of view and to discuss it in a group of students.
