ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

This course will help the students to perfect their knowledge of French, as they will translate texts (The sources and subjects are the following: press, documents concerning the functioning of enterprises, finance, banking, business, exchange, judicature, European Union etc. The press texts and other documents are always up-to-date.

Credit: assiduity, activity, one test and one marked translation in the end of the term.

This is an obligatory course for the Translation section.

Full description:

Preliminary requirements: In the academic year 2009/2010, only students who have taken part in the translation profile during their third year of studies and have successfully completed the proseminar and the specialist lecture will be admitted.

Syllabus: Translation exercises aimed at improving students' language skills through translation of press features and documents related to the life and activity of companies, the economy, finances and banking, the stock exchange, business, the judiciary and the EU from Polish into French. Selection of documents will be subject to change. Much use will be made of current press features and authentic documents.

Assessment criteria: based on regular attendance and in-class participation, two check tests, regular evaluation exercises at the end of individual units and a final translation task at the end of the semester.

Learning outcomes: students should be able to look for specific words and phrases needed to translate, as well as employ specialist vocabulary and correctly translate economic terms with regard to the context in which they occur in Poland and France. Furthermore, they should be able to translate an economic text from Polish into French, making best use of the rules of French grammar whilst doing their job.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student:

1. has the ability to search for and select specialized vocabulary for translation and to compile a glossary;

2. is able to use specialized dictionaries, terminology databases for this purpose and derive terminology from reading parallel texts;

3. is able to make a correct translation from Polish into French of an economic text related to business life, economy, finance, trade, banking, business, stock market, etc., intended for a wide audience;

4. can choose a translation strategy, justify it and apply it;

5. can make cultural adaptation in translation;

6. is able to assess the level of his economic knowledge and language skills in general French and specialized language;

7. understands the need for continuous professional training and improves skills;

8. at the end of the second semester, the student is able to translate consecutively with notation a 2-minute oral statement.

9. is able to carry out mutual evaluation with respect for the dignity and feelings of group members.

The subject implements the following learning outcomes to varying degrees, among others:

Upon completion of the course, the student knows and understands:

K_W03 to an in-depth degree the basic and complex processes taking place in language and literature in the countries of the French-speaking cultural area

K_W07, in a deeper degree the functions of language and the social and cultural aspects of its use in diverse, including atypical communication situations, including intercultural communication, related to the life of the enterprise

K_W08, to an in-depth degree grammatical, orthographic, lexical, semantic, phonological and stylistic issues in French. He is able to apply them in translation.

K_W09, to a deeper degree, detailed principles of analysis and interpretation of texts belonging to various functional styles of French, especially those relating to economics and business

graduate is able to:

K_U05, recognize, analyze in depth and interpret various types of cultural products (language, literature), using adequate and complex terminology and appropriate research methods and techniques, including terminology related to the life of the enterprise

K_U09, communicate orally and in writing in French at level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

K_U11, use the acquired knowledge and skills in depth in planning professional development

K_U13, apply complex information and communication techniques in the process of acquiring knowledge and communicating in the field of literary and linguistic studies
