Prerequisites (description):

Knowledge of Spanish level B2 and English level advanced enough to understand a theoretical text. Student should understand theoretical texts and texts chosen for analysis. It is also required to have basic notions of the terminology related to narrative and dramatic text theory studies.

Short description:

The seminar is aimed at those students who are interested in researching contemporary audiovisual cultural texts (television series and performing arts) and in preparing their final thesis in the area of literary theory and/or theater theory applied to the aforementioned texts.

Full description:

The objective of the seminar is to familiarize students with the methodology and basic concepts of the analysis of audiovisual culture texts. It also aims to develop analytical tools provided, among others, by the theory of literature, audiovisual studies and theater studies (performativity, acting work, the construction of theatricality).

Within the framework of the seminar, students will learn the principals of academic discourse, as well as the methodology of elaborating a bachelor's degree dissertation. They will elaborate preliminary hypotheses, choose the corpus to work on, and formulate the subject of their dissertations. The following stages encompass the developing of dissertation's plan and gathering material and bibliography.

The student is expected to apply the aforementioned tools in order to elaborate the complete dissertation. The seminar will focus on two types of audiovisual culture texts:

- contemporary Spanish-language serials (21st century, above all)

- Hispanic texts and plays (from the late 1990s to the present).

The main areas of research include, among others:

- the depiction of socio-political problems (social exclusion, violence, gender and sexuality, the clash of cultures, etc.),

- the narrative and dramatic structure of the series (the narrativity and "dramaticity" of television series);

- genealogical and formal aspects (the "purity" of the genre versus formal hybridization);

- audiovisual communication (the mediation of series and the in-mediacy of the theatrical experience, the notion of theatricality),

- the analysis of particular strategies (parody, intertextuality, metafiction, among others).

The particular topics and specialized literature will be chosen according to the interest of each student, hence a small change in the bibliography may occur.

Learning outcomes:

Upon graduation student knows:

basic terminology and fields of research covering audiovisual and performative texts, as well stage plays or scripts; basic concepts and principles in the field of intellectual property protection and copyright (K_W03, K_W09).

Upon graduation the student knows how to:

read and understand Spanish language texts and watch audiovisual and performative productions in Spanish; present their views, opinions, discuss, present issues covering their final thesis in Spanish; identify different types of audiovisual, theatrical, and dramatic productions, place them in a general historical and cultural context, and analyze them using basic terminology and methods encompassing literary studies and similar fields (interdisciplinary research); independently acquire knowledge and develop skills using appropriate sources from selected fields of science, such as literary studies or theater and drama studies (dictionaries, source texts, monographic studies, etc.); write a bachelor’s degree dissertation in Spanish using appropriate methods and sources covering literary studies or theater and drama studies; prepare oral presentations in Spanish using appropriate methods and sources covering literary studies or theater and drama studies; use basic theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts specific to the literary studies of the Spanish language field, TV series, theater and drama studies (K_U01, K_U02, K_U03, K_U04, K_U05, K_U06, K_U07).

Upon graduation the student is capable of:

critical assessment of their knowledge and skills, independent and autonomous work, and understands the need for improvement and lifelong learning; planning and organizing work, entrepreneurship and team collaboration, and compliance with professional ethics; active participation in the Spanish or Latin American culture using various forms and media and to work in a team performing various roles; Being informed about current processes and phenomena occurring in the Spanish or Latin American culture, theater, dramaturgy and TV productions (K_K01, K_K02, K_K03, K_K04).

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Didactic methods comprise the concise introduction of the planned topic, the preparation of papers and the subsequent discussion of the seminar participants. Subsequent stages will include tutoring meetings to discuss subsequent parts of the dissertation.

The evaluation is based on:

- attendance (it is possible to miss class 2 times without justification)

- active participation in class.

By the end of the first term it is mandatory to have submitted a detailed draft of the thesis (including bibliography and theoretical and methodological principles).

In the second term, participants are expected to complete the work by the indicated date. Detailed information will be presented during the first class.
