ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

The program provides students with the most important tendencies in modern linguistics, such as: principles of natural language description and key linguistics fields. Having completed the course, the student should be prepared to read linguistic texts independently and have mastered the basic knowledge necessary to participate in classes on Portuguese descriptive grammar.

Short description:

I. Tendencies in modern linguistics

1. Structuralism (formal and functional). Methodological assumptions. The concepts of a system, form, function, relevant and redundant features, diachrony, and synchrony.

2. Generative-transformational linguistics.

3. Cognitive linguistics.

II. Linguistic fields

1. External linguistics: phonetics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics.

2. Internal linguistics: phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, lexicology, stylistics).

III. Principles of natural language description

1. Principles of genetic and typological classification of languages. Natural, ethnic (including Creole) languages, inter-ethnic Pidgin, artificial); alive, dead. Families and language groups. Isolating-positional, agglutinative, fusion languages.

2. Portuguese as a pluricentric language. Creole languages ​​based on Portuguese.

3. Morphology.

4. Grammatical categories.

5. Syntax issues

6. Semantics

7. Lexicology

8. Stylistics.

Full description:

Presenting tendencies in modern linguistics such as: structuralism, generative-transformational linguistics, cognitive linguistics. Introduction to external and internal linguistics. External linguistics being phonetics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics. Internal linguistics understood as: phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, lexicology, and stylistics.

Understanding principles of natural language description: natural, ethnic (including Creole) languages, interethnic pidgin, artificial); alive, dead,

families and language groups. Describing Portuguese-based Creole languages.

Morphology: division into parts of speech, the concept of morpheme, word, lexeme; inflection and word formation; derivation, composition; classification of cores and affixes.

Overview of grammatical categories in typologically different languages. Syntax issues (syntax concord, case government, time consistency; formation within a nominal group; thematic and rematic structure of sentences. Semantics. Lexicology (etymology; share of inherited and borrowed vocabulary in the dictionary and in the text; neologisms). Stylistics (functional styles).

Learning outcomes:

A student possesses knowledge regarding the aforementioned issues.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The oral exam is based on giving correct and exhaustive answer on three randomly assigned exam questions. Three correct answers equals the best possible grade, with two correct answers - the second best grade, with one - satisfactory.

With three correct answers it is possible to draw an additional question to get an excellent mark (5!).

There is a possibility of conducting a half-examination, in which the student answers two randomized examination questions, which would cover 2/3 of the material.

The lecturer may consider an excellent class participation at the seminar as a factor increasing the grade of the oral exam.

O objetivo das aulas é evidenciar aos alunos uma certa unidade na grande diversidade linguística e cultural dos países de língua portuguesa. O programa propõe aos estudantes um vasto leque de temas que permitem compreender em que consiste o valor fundamental da Língua Portuguesa, quer dizer, o seu policentrismo (linguístico e cultural), assim como a sua enorme riqueza de variedades.

A Língua Portuguesa é pluricontinental e policêntrica, falada por 260 milhões de pessoas. Projeta-se em quatro continentes do nosso planeta e realiza-se em múltiplas variedades linguísticas. Como língua pluricêntrica não tem uma norma-padrão, nem possui o seu “centro”, porque todas as variantes dispõem de igual valor. Pode-se dizer que é uma língua dos portugueses, brasileiros, angolanos, moçambicanos, cabo-verdianos, guineenses, são-tomenses, ou timorenses - sociedades que vivem nas realidades sociais, linguísticas e culturais bem distintas.

Tendo em conta estas características da Língua Portuguesa, o objetivo das aulas é evidenciar aos alunos uma certa unidade na grande diversidade linguística e cultural dos países de língua portuguesa. O programa propõe aos estudantes um vasto leque de temas que permitem compreender em que consiste o valor fundamental da Língua Portuguesa, quer dizer, o seu policentrismo (linguístico e cultural), assim como a sua enorme riqueza de variedades.
