Short description:

The subject is devoted to the presentation of correctional treatment in closed penal institutions in German-speaking countries. There are going to be presented legal and practical issues in prison system of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein: their Executive Penal Codes, aims, assumptions, organizational solutions and treatment methods. This systematic and methodical perspective will be connected with Polish law and correctional treatment notion.

An important aspect of the course is to enrich the vocabulary of the participants of the specialized terms and phrases used in correctional treatment in German-speaking countries.

Full description:

The goal of the subject is to present a correctional treatment system in German-speaking countries from the legislative, organizational and implementation point of view, including:

• legal basis for prison system

• objectives, principles, organization and methods of influence on inmates,

• German prison system,

• Swiss prison system,

• prison system in Austria,

• solution in Liechtenstein,

• organizational and practical differences of imprisonment between German-speaking countries,

• specifics of federalism for the form of prison system,

• penal institutions in German-speaking countries and the Polish prison system.

The introductory part will be presented basic information on the specifics of the prison system in German-speaking countries. Then will be discussed legal basis, objectives, principles, methods for correctional treatment in various countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein). The final part is devoted to the presentation of the similarities and differences of these solutions with those used in Poland.

Group work will be introduced as well as multimedia and information technology usage development including the ability of creating multimedia presentations. During the process of looking for information about solutions in German-speaking countries, German language skills will be developed.

Knowledge

Having finished the process of learning, based on accumulated knowledge, a student:

• descries assumptions and practical organizational forms of penal institutions in German-speaking countries,

• explains connections between prison system in German-speaking countries and Polish legal and correctional notion,

• describes functioning mechanisms of contemporary German-speaking institutional solutions from the Polish and European point of view,

• recognizes weak and strong aspects of activity of German-speaking penal closed institutions in the field of social reintegration

Skills

Having finished the process of learning, a student has the following skills:

• correctly assesses the solutions in penal institutions of German-speaking countries with the goals of correctional education and social reintegration of inmates,

• defines aspects of solutions in German-speaking prison systems in the field of correctional treatment and social prevention that are prone to further evolution,

• interprets different German-speaking legal solutions from the point of view of their correctional usefulness,

• prepares summaries and presentations based on German language sources.

Personal and social competences

Having finished the process of learning, a student has the following personal and social competences:

• follows the ethical rules of correctional stuff and in Polish, European and Global law,

• verifies activities of Polish correctional institutions from European, especially German-speaking countries point of View,

• is aware of the need to change the system of correctional, welfare and aiding solutions.
