ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;

Short description:

The class aims to present the main trends in the development of Russian-language protest music in Eastern Europe, Russia.  In a broader context will be given an analysis of relations between protest culture and power structures. Knowledge of Russian on B1 level at least.
Full description:

Classes are conducted in the form of a lecture and will be devoted to the study and analysis of audiovisual materials from the broadly defined post-Soviet cultural area. Basic musical trends of protest culture in the post-Soviet area, cultural, political and ideological significance of song lyrics, performers and their activities will be presented. The subject of discussion during the class will be the analysis of the content of the contemporary protest language in (musical) culture, the interaction of cultural, social, economic and political processes in relation to the actions of the authorities.

The lecture is intended to broaden the knowledge of the post-Soviet region, enable the participants of the course to critically examine important aspects of social, cultural and political life. In addition, the class aims to improve linguistic competence. Within the framework of the analysis of song lyrics and audiovisual materials, contemporary trends in the development of colloquial Russian language will be presented (slang, cases in Russian borrowed from other languages, vulgarisms). The following is the scope of the class:

1. Soviet rock of the 80s - controlled protest.

2) Belarusian protest 2020

3) „My żdiom pieremien”. Rock-music as a symbol of the turn of epochs.

4. Grazhdanskaya oborona and the Siberian underground.

5. The narrative of protest in alternative rock.

6. National declaration. Rock-music of Eastern Europe.

7. Russian rap-underground. Youth protest culture of the early XXI century.

8. Crisis of rock-music as a protest language.

9. Performative protest. The case of Pussy riot.

10. Rap as a new poetry of protest.

11. Confrontation with the authorities. Official and oppositional trends in Russian rap.
