Prerequisites (description):

Proficiency in reading in English is required; basic language skills in one of the languages of the Mediterranean-Balkan region will be appreciated.

Short description:

Sites of memory in the Balkans are presented in the broader context of problems of memory, tradition, development of national canons in cultures rebuilding their identity and “leaving” the Ottoman Empire at different times in the 19th and early 20th century and leaving Yugoslavia in the late 20th century.

Problems of Balkan specificity are presented by the teacher (and invited guests) in special lectures on Balkan sites of memory, the memory of earlier and contemporary history, tradition and national canons developing in the Balkans from the 19th century.
