Short description:

This course aims to develop a deeper understanding of selected challenges that we are/will be facing. This will be achieved through a series of interlinked activities: independent work by students (based on a list of suggested readings), a series of debates (possibly formatted as an Oxford Debate) which will provide a forum for exchanging ideas and arguments, and short essays aimed at summarising particular issues.

Full description:

The objectives of the course are twofold - substantive and formal. The substantive is to think through and discuss some fundamental issues - the challenges of the first decades of the 21st century. Formal - to learn to present arguments effectively but concisely (litotes!), but also to respond effectively to counter-arguments. The format of the class will also allow for efficient group work - both in the - lengthy - preparation for the class and during the offline meetings themselves.

Bibliography will be set immediately after we all decide for the final four topics.
