Short description:

Sites of memory in the Balkans are presented in the broader context of problems of memory, tradition, development of national canons in cultures rebuilding their identity and “leaving” the Ottoman Empire at different times in the 19th and early 20th century and leaving Yugoslavia in the late 20th century.

Problems of Balkan specificity are presented by the teacher (and invited guests) in special lectures on Balkan sites of memory, the memory of earlier and contemporary history, tradition and national canons developing in the Balkans from the 19th century. The course supplements the course of lectures on the HISTORY OF BALKAN AND GREEK CULTURE.

Full description:

The seminar presents sites of memory in the Balkans in the broader context of the problems of memory, tradition, development of national canons in cultures rebuilding their identity and “leaving” the Ottoman Empire at different times, starting from the early 19th century, through the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, to the end of the 20th century.

Problems of Balkan specificity are presented by the teacher in the form of three special lectures on Balkan sites of memory, the memory of earlier and contemporary history, tradition and national canons developing in the Balkans from the 19th century.

In the lectures, the Balkans are presented through the unique features of a developing territory, the dominating religions, and finally ideologies that led to changes. At the same time, the lectures are a summary and an exemplification of problems discussed with the students earlier, and include issues such as the differences between Serbian and Albanian memory, between the developing canons of Macedonian, Bulgarian and Greek tradition, as well as showing examples of multicultural and multi-denominational sites/cities like Thessaloniki or Istanbul where different national traditions coexist.

The fundamental aim of the course is to present Balkan issues in the context of the discussion on memory and national canons, a wider and understandable background being provided by Polish disputes over memory and the form of the national canon.
