The purpose of this seminar is to introduce key thinkers representing mystical traditions within Western culture. |
| Full description: |
There is a stereotype according to which Western culture is characterized exclusively by rational thinking. According to this simplistic image, this is in contrast to Asian cultures, which in turn are filled with mystical traditions. The purpose of this seminar is to show that this is a false vision of Western culture. There is both a rational and empirical component, as well as a strongly present mystical element. The seminar will feature more than a dozen representatives of the Western mystical tradition, both denominational and non-denominational. |

| Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
In order to receive credit, class participants should read the texts discussed, participate in the discussion, give a paper that is an introduction to the text discussed, and write a paper on the topic agreed with the instructor. The paper, class activity and written work will be the basis for the grade. Number of absences: 2 |
