Short description:

During the crisis of the legitimacy of the government, the question arises about the Polish political tradition and its appropriate form of government. The aim of the seminar will be reconstruction and critical reflection on the Polish tradition of political philosophy. During the classes, an interdisciplinary approach will be proposed, taking into account the methodological framework set by political philosophy and material from the history of Polish philosophical and political thought. Concepts seeking a universal political vision and positions emphasizing the importance of uniqueness and historical mission will be discussed. The reflections will be accompanied by the question of the relationship between the tradition of Polish philosophical thought and the search for an appropriate political form for it.

Political system of Poland is based on democratic principles and emphasizes the principle of collective self-determination, the rule of law and the protection of individual rights and freedoms. Philosophically, this is consistent with the Enlightenment ideals of freedom, equality and fraternity. At the same time, however, national identity refers to the uniqueness of historical experience and the specific nature of the political mission. The following issues will be discussed during the seminar: 1) Between the Enlightenment and Romanticism (1795-1830); 2) Polish philosophy of the inter-uprising period (1831-1863): messianism, philosophy of action, concept of patriotism, dispute over Russia; 3) Positivism and the creators of the anti-positivist breakthrough: Aleksander Świętochowski, Bolesław Prus, Eliza Orzeszkowa, Edward Abramowski, Stanisław Brzozowski; 4) The interwar period - in search of a form for the reborn Poland: political thought of Józef Piłsudski, Roman Dmowski, What is Bolshevism?; 5) After 1945: Henryk Elzenberg, political issues in the circle of the Warsaw school of the history of ideas (Baczko, Kołakowski, Walicki), "Solidarity", contemporary disputes about the political significance of the Romantic heritage: Marcin Król, Maria Janion; Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz
