Short description: |
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic problems of urban decay and renewal processes. The classes are specifically focused on social, spatial and economic mechanisms determining development, decline, and renewal of different urban areas in Poland and in the world. |

The course will cover the following issues: 1. Analysis of phenomena leading to degradation of cities. 2. Typology and delimitation of deprived areas. 3. Evolution, definition of concepts and their identification on selected examples (inter alia, conservation, restoration, reconstruction, regeneration, modernization, revitalization, and renewal). 4. Relations between social, spatial and economic processes of urban renewal. 5. Practices and principles of revitalization processes. 6. Pitfalls and problems of urban renewal. The classes are open to students from a wide range of backgrounds, including social sciences, economics, natural sciences, and the humanities. |

Learning outcomes: |
In terms of knowledge, the student: (1) knows and understands the major concepts and social, economic and spatial mechanisms of urban deprivation and urban renewal (K_W01). In terms of of abilities and skills, the student: (1) is able to identify factors of urban deprivation (2) critically analyzes and explains the conditions and consequences of urban renewal processes (K_U01). In terms of social skills, the student: (3) is ready to make use of gained knowledge when working with public, social and private actors in urban renewal processes (K_K04). |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Attendance and activity during classes (50 %) and a test covering material presented during the course (50 %). To pass (grade 3) it is necessary to get at least 60%. |
