Short description:

The main objective of this course is to provide participants (students, scholars and professionals) with the necessary techniques that can be used in the writing process. Although the focus is placed on the development of academic writing skills, professionals of all fields with a solid knowledge of Spanish language are encouraged to enlist.

In this course, participants will review topics related to the process of academic writing in Spanish language. Particular attention is placed on the requirements that top academic journals, in selected scientific fields, have established for the publication of research products.

The course departs from the assumption that writing is a process and focuses on issues like the clarity in the exposition of arguments and data/evidence.

Full description:

The goal of the course is to introduce the student to different resources and techniques for adequate academic writing in Spanish language.

The course presents the main features of what is understood as academic Spanish language. In Poland, writing in Spanish for scientific purpose is a common practice. Polish scholarship can be read in journal, books and specialised blogs across the Americas and in the Iberian peninsula.

The course acknowledges that writing is a process best achieved when the rules are learned and understood. Academic writing is a process connected to research as well as to professional development: for scholars interested in developing their career in this language, it is important to learn and understand those requirements for scientific publications (journals, books, blogs) or for delivering presentation in congresses and specialised fora has requirements specific to this specialised activity.

The course starts by reviewing the initial steps to write an academic text in Spanish and continues with topics like the structure of an academic text, the structure of arguments and paragraphs as well as the use of connectors. The course is an opportunity to review orthographic rules.

Knowledge

- Upon completion of the course, the student:

- Is aware of the standards and rules of academic writing in Spanish language.

- Is able to reflect on basic methods used in scientific research

- demonstrates the ability to think critically and to argue in writing

Skills

- Upon completion of the course, the student:

- Is able to write arguments in Spanish language.

- Is able to produce his/her own academic text in language that is ready for professional review.

- Shows familiarity with the formulation of scientific texts: research questions, hypothesis, and critical reviews of academic literature.

- Analyse and discuss the scientific work of others by critically analysing both the strength and weakness of academic arguments.

Competences

- Upon completion of the course, the student:

- will be able to formulate his or her own opinion about academic subjects.

- will be able to understand the importance of academic writing

- Has qualifications to write texts in Spanish language following academic standards

- Is prepared to pursue the publication of professional and academic texts

- Observes the rules concerning the academic writing style in Spanish.

- Understands the need for continuous improvement in academic writing.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Writing assignments are to be submitted in Spanish language

First Essay: 1000 words (20%)

Second Essay: 1500 words (30%)

Third Essay: 1500 words (50%)
