Short description:

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with general issues related to medicinal herbs: medicinal properties, cultivation, harvesting, and application in the common treatment of various health disorders and diseases. During the course, many examples of different medicinal herb species are presented, as well as their taxonomic importance, the examples of active compounds (secondary metabolites) and their pharmacological action. The lectures will discuss in detail the results of some studies on the effect of action of selected active compounds on specific disease, the form of the preparation used and the dosage depending on the age. During the course, the contribution of medicinal herbs in maintaining health in the history of mankind will also be discussed, depending on the cultures at different latitudes, as well as taking into account the current development of Polish herbal enterprises.

Full description:

The schedule of classes includes 15 meetings (90 minutes / meeting) in the form of lectures, during which selected species of medicinal herbs used in the treatment of common health disorders and/or diseases will be presented. Some results of in vitro and in vivo tests on the therapeutic effects of selected active compounds on specific health issue and the occurring cellular responses (systemic, lymphatic system, cytokine cascades), formulation of the preparation and a dosage will be discussed in detail. Examples of medicinal herbs applications over the centuries in various cultures and in the current practice will be given.
