People and Populism in the World

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with selected issues of populism in the World, to show different research approaches explaining the essence of these processes and phenomena and to discuss their impact on events in Europe and the world. Invited lecturers from French universities will participate in the classes

These lectures in English are an introduction to the theory of populism in contemporary politics. They are co-organized with the Center of political researches of Sciences Po Paris (CEVIPOF).

Half of the sessions will be devoted to lectures and debates with guest French specialists, on specific issues other on special areas(France, Central Europe, USA China, the Arab World). The program of guest lectures is preliminary.

These lectures in English are an introduction to the theory of the relations between people and the populism. They are co-organized with the Center of political researches of Sciences Po Paris (CEVIPOF).

The lectures on classical theories of populism will be conducted by Dr. Nicolas Maslowski, sociologist and political scientist, director of the Center for French social sciences center, and coordinator of the seminar. The sessions will be devoted to lectures by and debates with guest French specialists, on specific issues and areas. The program of guest lectures is preliminary:

After completing the seminar, the student will obtain:

- complete the understanding on people and societies, and theories of populism.

- learn selected approaches to social research.

Skills allowing:

- explain selected problems.

Attitudes allowing for:

- recognizing the advantages of analyzing actuality in the modern world based on academic knowledge and a broader intellectual view based on in-depth reflection.

Attendance (permitted absence from 1 classes per semester), active participation in the discussion, essay in English at the end of the semester referring to one of the subjects of the seminars (6 pages). The essay will be assessed by the coordinator.

Students are expected to read designated materials in English prior to the start of each class and be ready to submit comments and / or questions in discussions.
