ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 5.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The classes are the basic course of Latin for beginners expanded with elements of Latin for lawyers.

Full description:

The classes are aimed at enabling students to contact with the relics of Latin literature and providing them with instruments needful for deeper understanding source texts.

For this purpose students should be taught basic inflection and syntax questions:

inflection:

declinations(I-V), proverbs’ declination, numerals’ declination

- the verb: indicativus activi and passivi of all tenses, imperativus, coniunctivus

- participial participles

- comparison of adjectives

- main and ordinal numerals

syntax:

- basic functions of cases (genetivus partitivus, ablativus auctoris, ablativus comparationis, ablativus temporis)

-accussativus cum infinitivo, ablativus absolutus, coniugatio periphrastica passiva

- the most important functions of coniunctivus

- basic knowledge about subordinate clauses

According to the specificity of Latin for lawyers since almost the first classes legal maxims and specialist terms are introduced apart from literary texts. Some grammar topics such as imperativus futuri are presented paying special attention to the particular language relics (in this case - The Law of Twelve Tablets is presented). In the second semester of the course the reading of short fragments of such works as Institutiones, Digesta etc. is planned.

Learning outcomes:

After the course a student:

- analyses a simple Latin sentence paying special attention to grammar forms and syntax (maxims, sayings)

- transforms grammar forms (changing voices e.g. from active to passive, number, tences)

- translates a simple Latin text with a dictionary

- recognizes vocabulary with Latin roots and correctly describes its meaning

- appreciates the importance of knowing Latin for a law student

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

- during semester 2 or 3 written tests (with grammar task and elements of translation)

- in every classes the appraisal of student’s preparation to them and activity during tchem

- presence at the classes is obligatory – 2 missed classes a semester is allowed. In the case of more missed classes a student should pass them during their teacher’s office hours

- final written text
