Short description:

This course includes issues related to symptoms, aetiology, diagnosis and therapy of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The criteria of ASD in DSM-5 and ICD-10 will be discussed. Students will be provided with useful methods and diagnostic tools. Various approaches and forms of therapy, such as behavior modification, developmental and educational approach, and controversial therapeutic methods such as Option method, Holding, non-directive therapy and others will be discussed. Some meetings will be devoted to the problems of families of children with autism, and the role of professionals working with these children.

Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

- properly use terms related to pervasive developmental disorders,

- define these disorders,

- explain the diagnostic criteria and describe the diagnostic methods and instruments,

- compare autism and other developmental disorders

- understand and discuss the difficulties associated with autism diagnosis

- indicate the basic approaches in autism therapy and compare them with each other

- characterize the family problems associated with autism and their determinants.

He/she indicates the main features of an effective intervention and understands the value of the evidence-based approaches.

Full description:

Main topics (one point does not correspond to one lecture):

1. Definition and classification of autism spectrum. Development of knowledge: early childhood autism according to Kanner, Asperger's syndrome, the concept of "autism spectrum." Terminology.

2. Autism from a medical perspective (ICD-11, DSM-5). Dimensional approach: autistic traits and behaviors. The concept of neurodiversity.

3. Autism epidemic?

4. Social and emotional development of people on the autism spectrum.

Recognition, expression, and regulation of emotions. Social competence. Joint attention, imitation, and participation in social interactions.

5. Communication: non-verbal communication and language development.

6. Restricted patterns of behavior, activities, and interests.

7. Cognitive development of people with autism. Intellectual abilities profile. Island abilities. Specificity of information processing and cognitive functioning (theory of mind, executive functions, central coherence). Cognitive styles.

8. Biological correlates of autism spectrum.

9. Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder. Early recognition of the spectrum. Diagnosis in older children and adults. Co-occurrence and overlap of diagnoses. Functional assessment. Methods, diagnostic tools.

11. Therapy, education, and rehabilitation of people on the autism spectrum. Therapeutic approaches. Early intervention. Effectiveness of supporting people on the autism spectrum.

12. The situation of families with children on the autism spectrum.
