ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

During the seminar we will discuss the development of studies on gender and sexuality within social and cultural anthropology. We will focus on: various meanings of terms sex and gender; dichotomies such as culture/nature, public/private and an anthropological critique of those binary oppositions; mechanisms that take part in social construction of gender and sexuality, such as education and religion; construction of masculinity and femininity in postcolonial and postsocialist world.

During the seminar we will discuss a development of studies on gender and sexuality within social and cultural anthropology. We will focus on: various meanings of the terms sex and gender; dichotomies such as culture/nature, public/private and an anthropological critique of those binary oppositions; mechanisms that take part in social construction of gender and sexuality, such as education and religion; construction of masculinity and femininity in postcolonial and postsocialist world.

Learning outcomes:

Having completed the course, students:

- have knowledge of the notions "sexuality" and "gender" and their usage in modern social sciences;

- can use these notions in their own fieldwork;

- can bring together theoretical knowledge with social activism in favour of social and sexual minorities
