A lecture on the history of the Russian Empire from the times of Peter I to the end of the reign of Catherine II. Takes up issues in the field of political, social and economic history, as well as the history of culture and ideas. |
Full description: |
Lecture to the history of the Russian Empire from the time of Peter I to the end of Katarina II. It takes issue with the history of political, social, economic, cultural history and history of ideas. The course includes the political history of Russia in 18th century. First, the creation of the Empire of Peter I with particular emphasis on the international situation, but also the modernization project. Then weakness in the so-called era of "court of storms", and finally further development in the time of Catherine II. We will discussed Russia's role in key events for Europe: the Northern War, the war of the polish succession, Russian-Turkish wars, the Seven Years War, the participation in partitions of Poland, in French Revolution. With internal problems will be presented the modernization of the state administration, the evolution of social relations, selected socio-economic issues (Cossack, folk rebellions, foreign settlement), matters of creating opinion about Russia in the West (for exemple the relationships of Catherine II with luminaries of the Enlightenment). |

Learning outcomes: |
After completing the series of lectures, the student: • Knows the basic facts of the content discussed in the lecture. The listener should learn about the situation of the Russian state in the eighteenth century, especially about its political, social and economic situation, and turning points. • Knows the terminology used to describe selected aspects of the history of Russia from the end of the 17th to the end of the 18th century. • It presents the development of forms of activity, the scope of competences and transformations of the most important Russian political institutions in a chronological and problematic perspective, taking into account social, economic and political conditions. • Understands the effects of Russia's great political and civilization leap in the 18th century, which created a vital situation to this day, especially with regard to the international position of the Empire. • First of all, he encouraged himself to read about Russia and explore its political tradition. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Presence at the lecture is a necessary condition. You can leave max. 2 lectures. The last lecture ends with a short one (approx. 30 minutes) written test (answer to the question open within the scope of the lecture). In situations special (more absences) is possible oral colloquium on reading agreed with leading. |
