Pełny opis: |
“The name of Alexander marks the end of one age of the world, the beginning of another.” – these famous words of Johann Gustav Droysen, opening his 1830s groundbreaking “History of Hellenism” are hardly an exaggeration. Indeed, the life of Alexander belongs to more than one epoch and to more than one world. The course will discuss the great conquerors’s background (thus his Macedonian world), then will switch to his conquests and the creation of new (universal?) empire (thus his greater world). The interest of this course will be also in the birth of the Hellenistic world and the spread/survival of Alexander’s legend in much later times. 1. The work-tool of Alexander’s historian 2.-3. The Macedonian kingdom before Alexander and Philip 4. The Greeks and Persia: a history of enmity and co-existence. 5-6. Philip II and his reforms. 7. Alexander’s main battles. 8. Alexander between Macedonian traditions and universal empire. 9. Alexander’s last plans. 10. The Successors: continuity and innovation. 11-12. Being a Hellenist: new consciousness of people in the post-Alexander world. 13-14: Alexander’s romance beyond Antiquity. 15. The closing meeting (with a test). |
