The lectures’ aim is to present the most important features of ancient Christianity. Several questions concerning Church structure, religiosity, theology, and the pagan-Christian relations will be discussed, especially those whose generally shared image should be changed. |

Synopsis 1. The background. The Mediterranean in the first centuries CE. 2. Jesus of Nazareth 3. The beginnings of the Church. Palestine and beyond 4. Parting ways. Jews and Christians. 5. Shaping the doctrine. Gnosticism, Marcionism, Montanism. 6. Persecutions. Reasons, character, and outcome. 7. 3rd century. The success. 8. Constantinian outbreak. Church and state. Great theological controversies. 10. New religiosity: saints, miracles, and pilgrimages. 10. Early monasticism. 11. Rituals of ancient Christianity. 12. Episcopal sees. Big and small. 12. Church in the West. 13. Christianity and classical culture. 14. Early Christian art. This plan may be slightly modified; the praticipants will learn about it in advance. |

Learning outcomes: |
At the end of this series of lectures its participants should understand the development of Christianity and the structure of the Church, be aware of problems which the historians have to face when studying this phenomenon, know major discussions and questions concerning early Christianity. |
