The course shall touch upon the use of regression models in social sciences. It will start with ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and its assumptions to proceed to non-linear models, such as logistic regression or Poisson regression, used to model certain special types of dependent variables. The course shall utilize STATA, and various small pieces of additional free software (e.g. CLARIFY) that can be

installed within STATA, to demonstrate how to use statistics consciously, efficiently and avoiding common errors and flaws.

academic discussion

The didactic goal of the subject is to present and academically discuss the attributes and constitutive features of contemporary political analyses in the context of broadly understood social sciences or inquiries in humanities. In this regard, the specificity of the political science research, diverse in form and content, will be explained against the background of scientific cognition, as well as based on key challenges (problems) occurring both in theoretical-political reflection and in empirical analyses.

Symbolic logic of propositional and predicate calculus will be studied. We also provide basic notions of set theory.

Teaching methods applied; lecture, discussion, problem solving exercises, discussions, case analyses etc. At the end of every lecture a few questions or issues concerning the content of the lecture will be given to be solved by yourself

Media researchers around the world more and more often pay attention to certain shortcomings of classical methods in the field of social sciences and humanities. Much is being said about the need for triangulation, and scholars are also inclined towards modern technologies such as eyetracking, facetracking, EDA / GSR, EEG, NIRS etc. It turns out that what the respondent feels / experiences / reacts to is highly measurable and can be subject to standardization. If so, then contemporary media researchers no longer have to limit themselves to in-depth interviews, observation diaries, surveys or focus groups.
