Brief description

During classes we will be analyzing the most important literary texts of the French Middle Ages wondering whether they belong only to the history of literature, or whether their lively receipt is also possible. So we will be trying to emphasize their timeless dimension, concerning such issues, as the place of the individual in the society, expression of emotions, body image, forming of the identity, family relations, spiritual search, attitude towards the death, meaning of the relation with the second person.

  • Seminar - 30 hours
Groups

Brief description

The seminar will be devoted to the analysis of the theme of the border and its crossing in the French medieval literature. We will focus on the borders significant for the expression of the different areas of medieval culture and mentality: between the real and magical world, human and animal, earthly and divine, sacred and profane. We will talk about mystical experience, profanation and transgression of social and moral norms, and about changes accompanying these phenomena. The thematic approach will be related to a formal analysis regarding the crossing of the limits of literary conventions by the discussed authors.

Brief description

(in Polish) Celem kursu jest omówienie najważniejszych prądów w literaturze francuskiej XIX wieku (romantyzm, realizm, naturalizm, dekadentyzm, symbolizm) w kontekście motywu nocy i jego różnorodnych aspektów (temat wieczoru, światła księżyca, gwiazd, snu i marzenia sennego, koszmaru, itd.). Analizę literacką utworów poetyckich, opowiadań i fragmentów powieści dopełnią konteksty nokturnowe obecne w malarstwie oraz muzyce epoki.
