Short description: |
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the subject of migration and its consequences in sending and receiving countries. Characteristics of the most important migration flows and discussion of their socio-economic impact in the world. Particular attention will be given to regional diversification of economic (labour) migration and consequences of migration for the areas of emigration and immigration. |

The lecture aims to familiarize students with the subject of economic migration and its effects in the countries sending and receiving migrants The lecture is introductory, the following topics will be discussed: 1. Characteristics of contemporary economic migrations - introduction 2. Traditional immigration countries: United States of America - Example of a country with the largest number of international migrants - historical perspective 3. Traditional immigration countries: Canada - multiculturalism, ethnic neighbourhoods, ethnourbs 4. History of migration to Europe - division into Western, Southern and Eastern Europe 5. Migration policy of the European Union, EU response to migration crises 6. Labour migrations of Poles and migrations to Poland. Poland as an example of a migration transformation country 7. The specificity of economic migration in the Persian Gulf countries - economies based on the work of economic migrants 8 Characteristics of contemporary population migrations in and out of Africa - migrations related to climate change 9. The specificity of economic migration in the countries of South and Southeast Asia - changes in the directions and intensity of migration, female migration 10. Characteristics of contemporary economic migrations of people in and from Latin America - changes in directions and intensity of migration, integration "lite" The estimated number of hours that the student must spend to achieve the learning outcomes defined for the subject. Lecture: 1 ECTS - including: 1 ECTS - in direct contact with the teacher 1 ECTS student's contribution including 0.5 ECTS preparation for the colloquium, 0.5 ECTS getting acquainted with additional materials (publications, reports) |

Learning outcomes: |
After completing the course, the student knows and understands: - the most important features of contemporary migration and their determinants - how migration affects different areas (both sending and receiving areas) The student is able to: - interpret the processes of migration in the light of the theory of migration - use theoretical knowledge to describe and solve a research problem - transfer geographic knowledge to different audiences Competences / attitudes: The course shapes the attitude of openness towards cultural diversity, migration behavior and the socio-cultural effects of migration. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Credit is based on the result of a written test consisting of open and closed questions. 50% of the points are required for a positive assessment. |
