ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Main fields of studies for MISMaP:

geography
spatial development

Type of course:

elective courses

Prerequisites (description):

Ecohydrologu combines the knowledge of ecology and hydrology. It is focused on study of water bodies in the catchment area. It is good to know the ArcGIS software.

Mode:

Classroom
Classroom and field classes

Short description:

Ecohydrology assume that the first level of importance is at abiotic factors which control biotc components. It is also possible to regulate hydrological processes by biotic factors. This is so called dual regulation principle. It is planned to have a visit at European regional Center of ecohydrology i n Łódź. Field work is organised in the valley of the Vistula River with the focus on oxbow lakes management.

Full description:

The lecture covers the following issues:

- How to increase the environment capacity at the age of antropocene.

- Paradigms of ecohydrology - dual regulation principle

- Hoe the catchment properties shape the rainfall-runoff response and solutes and sediments transport.

Methods of indicating disperse and point sources of the water pollution sources.

Theory of river continuum and main biotic factors in the river environment.

Problems of Sulejów reservoir eutrophication

Exercises consist of two parts. First is the description of used in Poland methodologies of lakes quality state and resistance using the pre-EU accession methods. In the second part, there is an estimated buffering potential of the selected oxbow lakes in Warsaw. It is discussed the improvement of buffering capacity of the shore zone by proper spatial management. The second part is prepared as PP presentation and discussed in the classroom. Fieldwork and presentation is prepared in 2 person groups.

Learning outcomes:

K_W02 student knows and understands complex relations between ecology and hydrology and man activity;

- description of the catchment properties and sediments with solutes transport;

- problem of surface water eutrophication and sources of nutrients;

- conflicts between different users of the shore zone of the lakes

- principles of spatial planning in the catchment.

K_U05 student's skills:

- how to prepare the diagnosis of the environment state and define the conflicts between natural processes and needs of the man.

- be able to explain the differences in the ecological state of waters classifications due to changes in methodology.

- have skills to prepare, perform the research and show the results

K_K05 has a motivation to start projects with the motivation to be responsible for a stae of the ecosystems and Earth.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Knowledge from the lectures is evaluated on the basis of essay (50%)

Practicals evaluation:

average from the second task (40%)

active participation in the exercises (10%)

presence at the exercises is obligatory. Only 2 justified absences are accepted. Material that was skipped by the absence needs to be covered by the student in agreement with a lecturer. Case of the more absences will be justified by KJD.
