Classroom

The course is a compendium of knowledge on the role and position of Latin America and the Caribbean in the contemporary world economy, taking into account the most important changes taking place in recent decades and relations with other regions and partners outside the region. The analysis will include, inter alia, principles of functioning of Latin American and the Caribbean and global markets as well as challenges and threats facing Latin America and the Caribbean and the world economy. The political, social and cultural context of the changes taking place will also be important.

Meetings with researchers and / or practitioners and / or diplomats from Latin America will be organized during the course.

The course is a compendium of knowledge on the role and position of Latin America and the Caribbean in the contemporary world economy, taking into account the most important changes taking place in the global economy in recent decades and relations with other regions and partners outside the region. The analysis will include, inter alia, principles of functioning of Latin American and global markets, trends in the world economy that affect the functioning of Latin America, as well as challenges and threats facing Latin America and the world economy. The main indicators of the economic and social development of the world economy and countries of the Latin American region will be analyzed. The political, social and cultural context of the changes taking place will also be important. The lecturer will require students to be active while discussing specific issues (discussions, encouraging them to ask questions and express their opinions).

Topics covered:

1. Contemporary world economy. Definitions, characteristics, regularities, conditions. Trends and challenges.

2. Globalization, internationalization, transnationalization, integration, disintegration. Is there a global economy?

3. Political, social and cultural context of changes taking place in the contemporary world economy and the Latin American and the Caribbean region.

4. New political trends in the region.

5. New growth centers of the world economy. New and old hegemons. The balance of economic forces and political strategies.

6. Economic and social change in the Latin American region. Myth or Reality?

7. Economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean against the global background.

8. Brazil. A new giant in the world economy or a giant on clay legs?

9. Cono Sur countries.

10. Mexico in North America, Latin America and globally.

11. Andean countries.

12. Central America.

13. The Caribbean. Role in the region and the world economy.

14. Integration and disintegration processes in Latin America and the Caribbean versus global processes.

15. Prospects and threats.

- can analyze the role and position of the most important Latin American and the Caribbean economies against the global background;

- is able to prepare a presentation on the selected Latin American economy

- attendance is obligatory (two unexcused absences are allowed)

- presentation and outline on the selected economy of Latin America (50%)

- interactive project of your choice (50%)
