Prerequisites (description): | The aim of the course is to show - from a historical perspective - the basic processes shaping the political, social, cultural and religious image of the contemporary Middle East. The phenomena and processes taking place mainly in the period after World War I (the fall of the Ottoman Empire) to the present day will be presented. |

The concept of the Middle East. The boundaries of the region. Characteristics of the region and subregions. Characteristics of the Arab and Muslim world. Contemporary states and societies in the Middle East. Arab Empire. The roots of pan-Arabism, pan-Islamism and religious fundamentalism. Consequences of World War I for the region. The genesis of the conflict in Palestine. Pax Britanica in the region. Consequences of World War II and international relations in the Middle East during the Cold War. LAS, Gulf Cooperation Council and Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The Gulf Wars and the Pax Americana. The war in Syria. Kurdish problem. The role of Iran and Turkey in the region. |

Learning outcomes: |
After completing the course, the student should know the most important processes and phenomena that shaped the international system in the Middle East region in the 20th and 21st centuries, and the role and importance of individual regional and extra-regional actors in these processes. He should be able to critically analyze the events and phenomena taking place in the region. |
