ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Short description:

This course is divided into the theoretical and practical parts.

The theoretical part (first half) is designed to help students to analyze Chinese economic policy from as diverse perspectives as possible.

The practical part is designed to help students to obtain knowledge, skills and competence to develop own judgments and recommendations in the field of doing business in China and with the participation of China in the third countries. The objective is to create a foundation enabling to understand the way Chinese approach business and their relations with foreign partners and the basic structures of economic life in China.

This course is divided into the theoretical and practical parts.

The theoretical part (first half) is designed to help students to analyze Chinese economic policy from as diverse perspectives as possible.

The macro-level analysis by students on the way Chinese economic policy has impacted the global economy is balanced by their micro-level analysis on the way the policy impacts business and individuals in China.

The practical part will start with analyze of Chinese imaginary as related to business activities, the value of money in China to follow with the concept of the great national project of the New Silk Road.

The first part will continue with the brief tour on :

• China's economic expansion: between assertiveness and aggression.

• Capital, Infrastructure, Investment, Trade - Trapped Countries, Threats and Opportunities.

• Along the Silk Road - business with China in the post-Soviet sphere.

• Belarus - a case study. How to win on the Silk Road.

• The importance of political relations for business with China.

• The pandemic - what does it mean for business with China?

This will be followed with the focus on CEE and Poland :

On the mountain pass - hopes and disappointments.

• The image of the CEE region in China.

• Eastern Europeans - appetite for business and geopolitics.

• Can the CEE countries earn money on the Silk Road? Diversification of the region.

• Failure of the Polish strategy of economic promotion.

Current state and repair paths. What can a Polish entrepreneur count on?

- Does China want to weaken the ties between Poland with the EU and America through the economy?

- should we defend ourselves against China? Is it worth it to raise Chinese money and how to do it.

- China and plans to develop infrastructure in the region.

- Why can't we feed China? The importance of subjective factors and errors in trade with China.

- Should Poland defend itself against imports from China? About making money on imports.

- map of Chinese institutions supporting entrepreneurs from abroad.

The course will finish with remarks on business practice with China

• cultural differences

• Preparation for dialogue with Chinese business

• Negotiation strategies

• Chinese relational business

Bibliography:

Students are expected to study assigned materials in English/Polish before each class and be prepared to present their observations.

Learning outcomes:

As a whole, the theoretical part addresses four main underlying themes:

(1) China’s development model and future outlook

(2) Changing economic relations and geopolitics

(3) Demographic trend and technical advance

(4) Cultural and social aspects of economic transition

The student has a structured knowledge of connections between politics and economy in China The student acquires basic practical knowledge on making business with China , Chinese business mentality ,traps and opportunities.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

In the theoretical part, grades will be weighted as follows:

50% Active participation

25% In-class quizzes related with assigned materials

25% Mid-term oral exam

In the practical part, students are graded in the final oral exam.

For the practical part, grades will be weighed as follows:

70 per cent : active participation in classes and strategic games

30 per cent : final oral exam
