ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

During the course, relations between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean will be discussed. The main emphasis will be on political and economic relations. Other aspects of cooperation will also be analyzed: diplomatic, cultural, educational, scientific, technological, climate, legal, policy transfer and development cooperation.

Short description:

The following blocks of issues will be discussed:

Historical and geographical conditions. External policy of the European Union - aspects of political, economic, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation. European Union development aid for Latin American and Caribbean countries. ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific) in interregional relations. Integration processes in both regions: relations with the Pacific Alliance, Mercosur, the Andean Community and other integration groups. Negotiation of association agreements. Poland and Latin America and the Caribbean. Prospects for further cooperation.

The classes will also include meetings with experts and diplomats dealing with EU-Latin America relations.

Students will prepare their own projects; the classes are largely in the form of workshops.

1. History of interregional cooperation. Conditions for past and present cooperation.

2. Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union as actors in international relations.

3. Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union in the global economy.

4. Main issues in cooperation between regions: interregional and multilateral dialogue.

5. Bilateral relations between the countries of both regions.

6. Integration initiatives in LAC. MERCOSUR-EU agreement.

7. Poland's relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.

8. Prospects for cooperation.

has knowledge of internal and external conditions of international relations in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean.

has knowledge of the specifics of the European Union's relations with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean

can identify and analyze the main areas of cooperation between EU countries and Latin America and the Caribbean

has the ability to independently formulate views, to support them with extensive argumentation using a wide range of approaches and theoretical perspectives, to formulate coherent conclusions and to summarize them synthetically,

SOCIAL COMPETENCE

is prepared to perform professional tasks requiring knowledge of the EU's relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries

is able to cooperate in a group, taking different roles in it

is able to present his point of view and support his position with prepared arguments

Basic elements of the course credit:

- final test

- active participation

- class attendance is obligatory (one absence is allowed).

Methods:

Elements of the seminar and lecture, elements of the analysis of source texts, monographic studies and statistical data. To an extent, the classes take the form of workshops and are based on group work of students.
