Short description: |
(in Polish) The class is aimed at introducing the students to the peculiarities of the literary culture in the medieval Mediterran. We will analyse such sources as anthologies of poetry, epic works, chronicles or the so-called biographical dictionaries to show the social, political and cultural context of Mediterranean literatures (with a certain stress on the poetry of the troubadours, as well as on Christian and Muslim Iberia). |

(in Polish) The main topics: I. Introduction to the history of classical Islam: the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphate, the conquest of Al-Andalus II. Introduction to the history of the Mediterranean: from the fall of Rome to feudal society III. Literary antecedents I: Roman literature– Statius, Catullus, Pervigilium Veneris IV. Literary antecedents II: the caliphal court in Baghdad and its literature V. The court in Muslim Spain: the Cordoban caliphate and the taifa kingdoms VI. Laudes Hispaniae VII. The 11th century in Al-Andalus: the age of poetry and decadence VIII. The main themes of Andalusi poetry in the „Golden Age” IX. The beginnings of the troubadour poetry X. The problem of The Dove’s Collar XI. Courtly love (fin amor) XII. The culture of narrative: the maqamat, Kalila and Dimna, El conde Lucanor, Decameron XIII. The knightly culture: Cantar de mío Cid and other medieval epic works XIV. Al-Andalus: the perishing paradise XV. The land of oc and the land of oïl: conflict and coexistence (The Song of Albigensian Crusade) Note: the list above should be treated as a mere indication and is subject to change accordingly with the needs. |
