Short description:

The purpose of the lecture is to present the main phenomena in the area of history of the Russian literature of the first half of the 19th century. The issues are presented in the chronological and problem-related arrangement.

Specific purposes:

The purpose of the lecture is to present − in the chronological and problem-related arrangement − the main phenomena in the area of history of the Russian literature of the first half of the 19th century.

The classes consist of analyzing of the selected literary works of the first half of the 19th century due to the contents and forms.

Specific issues:

I. General issues. Regularities in the historic literary process. Periodization of the Russian literature of the first half of the 19th century.

II. Romanticism.

1. Preliminary issues. Historical and cultural background. Influence of the West-European literature (typological and genetic connections). Thematic preferences. Romantic hero. Development of the genres.

2. Literature of the early 19th century – between the Enlightenment and Romanticism (specific issues).

3. Works of Alexander Pushkin. Periodization. The Southern poems, Eugene Onegin. Lyric. Boris Godunov, the small tragedies. Prose, The Tales of Belkin.

4. Poets of the Pushkin's Pleiad – authors, works, themes, styles.

5. Works of Michail Lermontov. Lyric and its periodization. Drama. Prose, Hero of Our Time as a psychological novel.

6. Works of Nikolai Gogol. Ukrainian themes, Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka. Picture of St Petersburg in Gogol’s prose. Dead souls. Comedy. Late works.

7. Development of the sentimental prose – authors, works. Prose cycles. Fantasy motives. Historical themes.

III. Forties of the 19th century. The Natural school. Almanacs. Physiological sketch. Early prose of Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Poor Folk), Alexander Herzen (Who is to Blame?) and Ivan Turgenev (The Hunting Sketches).

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

− The student has well-well-organized detailed knowledge of the history of the Russian literature of first half of the 19th century (periods, trends; individual literary works, works of single authors; problems; genres).

− The student knows basic literature terminology.

− The student knows contents of the readings.

− The student mentions names of the 19th century literature researchers in Poland, Russia and West Europe, and relies on their works.

Skills:

− The student identifies periods in the history of the Russian literature of the first half of the 19th century and presents in details individual periods and literary trends.

− The student presents literary works characteristic for the individual periods and literary trends, and also puts them into a larger historical, cultural and literary context.

− The student uses basic literature terminology.

− The student possesses detailed research abilities in the analysis and interpretation of the literary works.

− The student recognizes selected quotes from the literary works of the first half of the 19th century.

− The student has an ability to work systematically.

Social competences:

− The student is aware of the role, importance and specificity of writing of the ancient periods.

− The student is aware of his responsibility for the preservation of the European cultural heritage of different periods.

− The student feels obligated to develop his own reading interests and is aware of his responsibility for the reading culture.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

4 ECTS (120 h) - student's own work (50% - reading literature, 50% - preparing for exam)

5! - Is able to faultlessy answer all questions (max points: 9), refers to knowledge not only from the teaching programme (points: 10).

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
