Short description:

The lecture is aimed at students interested in first-person analysis of the literary text and its interpretation from the sociological, cultural and narratological point of view. Based on theoretical works by eminent narratologists, it aims to outline various forms of content and expression of first-person texts, referring to a range of literary genres. The examples of works by the most eminent writers and people of culture, primarily Italian, but also foreigners of the 19th and 20th centuries, will show the differences and similarities of individual genres as well as the multi-faceted interpretation possibilities of first-person literature.

Full description:

Lectures on first-person narration in Italian and world literature in the second half of the 19th century and in the 19th century will discuss different types of first-person narrative based on different genres: autobiography, travel journals, personal journal, diary, autobiographical novel. The starting point for considerations on particular types of narrative strategies is the "autobiographical pact" formulated by Ph. Lejeune and the interpretative suggestions proposed by Beatrice Didier. The subject of detailed analysis will be the narrative techniques used in contemporary novels with a first-person narrator, ranging from the epistolary novel (Goethe, Foscolo, Verga), Nievo, D'Annunzio in Italian literature, and Rousseau and Stendhal in 19th-century French, and Pirandello, Svevo, Proust, Sartre, Camus, Pavese, Nabokov et al.). During the course, extensive fragments of the works of these authors will be analyzed. The lectures are aimed primarily at students interested in literature and its genres, multi-context interpretation of literary texts, as well as future literary researchers, as they will help to indicate the interpretation key for individual works in the prose of contemporary literature and suggest a form of conducting their own analysis.
